Meta Platforms Inc. started its subscription service in the US on Friday. Users of Facebook and Instagram can now pay for verification, just like Twitter users do.
After users verify their accounts with a government ID, the Meta Verified service will cost $11.99 per month on the web and $14.99 per month on Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android.
The service, which was announced by Meta in February, is similar to Snapchat, which is owned by Snap Inc., and the messaging app Telegram. It is the latest attempt by a social media company to make money in ways other than ads.
Last year, Musk bought Twitter for $44 billion. Since then, the company has launched its Blue subscription service, which lets people pay for the blue check mark, which was only available to verified accounts of politicians, journalists, and other public figures before.
When Twitter Blue first came out in November, more people impersonated celebrities and brands on the platform. This caused Twitter to stop the service and relaunch it with different colored checks for people, businesses, and governments.
