The VR/AR headset that Apple has been rumored to be working on for a long time is expected to be announced at the upcoming WWDC event this week.
It has been almost ten years since Virtual Reality (VR) headsets were first introduced to consumers, but the concept of the device still has yet to gain widespread popularity. Meta, despite reportedly selling almost 20 million Quest headsets, still faces challenges in retaining VR users over a prolonged period.
During an internal presentation to employees, Meta’s VP of VR, Mark Rabkin, stressed the importance of retaining customers who purchase their VR headsets. Although the company has sold an impressive 20 million units, which surpasses any other single VR headset maker, Rabkin believes that they need to improve their efforts in keeping customers engaged with the product after their initial purchase.

Lots of people don’t like VR headsets because they’re uncomfortable and clunky. Another big problem with immersive technologies is that they don’t have good user experience design, which is preventing them from being widely adopted. Meta is not giving up and Apple also sees the market opportunity in the VR/AR space for developers with successful designs.
Meta Quest 3 VR headset
Meta officially announced its Quest 3 VR headset on June 1 in Mark Zuckerberg’s Instagram post. The Quest 3 VR headset isn’t just a basic upgrade from the Quest 2. It has a lighter and more comfortable design, and its optic profile is 40% slimmer compared to the previous model (not including the facial foam interface). Meta said that the unit now has a new Snapdragon chip that provides twice the graphics performance.
The headset will be released in the fall. It will have a 128GB version that costs $499.99. There will also be an extra storage option available for people who need more space, but the price for that has not been announced yet. Meta aims to enhance user-friendliness by ensuring compatibility with Quest 2’s games.
The good news is that the Quest 2 will still be available, but at a reduced cost. Starting on June 4, the price of the Quest 2 will be reduced by $100 to $299.99 for the 128GB version and the 256GB version will be reduced by $80 from $429.99 to $349.99. This information was announced by Meta.
So basically, the price of the base model has gone back to what it was last year and the version with more storage is now less expensive than it used to be. Zuckerberg was clever to reveal his announcement just a few days prior to Apple’s anticipated reveal of their mixed reality headset.
Meta said that it will release the Quest 3 this year during its Q3 2022 earnings report. The company mentioned that the cost of revenue will increase due to the launch of the next generation of the Quest headset, which will be a part of Reality Labs hardware costs.
