State-sponsored Chinese AI company introduces bot service to ‘surpass’ ChatGPT

iFlytek, a Chinese AI company, has introduced an AI system named “Spark Model” that it claims will surpass OpenAI’s ChatGPT by the end of this year.

The launch occurred at a tech event in Hefei known as “Spark Desk” and included a complete demonstration of the system’s abilities. Despite no agreement among scientists about the possibility of general artificial intelligence (AGI) using existing machine learning methods, Liu Qingfeng, the founder of iFlytek, hailed the Spark Model as the “dawn of general artificial intelligence.”

The “cognitive big model” or Spark Model reportedly has capabilities that are “far ahead” of those currently measured in China, according to Qingfeng. Nonetheless, information about the technology’s foundation is sparse, making it challenging to compare the Spark Model to other AI models.

Furthermore, OpenAI keeps training details and other proprietary information about ChatGPT under wraps, making direct comparisons between ChatGPT and comparable models challenging. Also, ChatGPT is prohibited in China, limiting OpenAI’s ability to train its models on Chinese languages and culture.

The current ban on ChatGPT in China has been viewed as potentially stifling, particularly when compared to Hong Kong, where there is no population-wide prohibition on the use of technologies such as ChatGPT and cryptocurrency.

If the Spark Model’s proposed upgrades do give iFlytek an advantage over OpenAI and ChatGPT, it would represent a major achievement in tech, particularly given the relatively short time frame.

The company’s research division began work on the Spark Model only six months ago, on December 22, 2022, according to Qingfeng. By contrast, OpenAI began developing its GPT products’ precursor in 2015, and ChatGPT was not launched until November 30, 2022.

AI technology’s development has accelerated quickly in recent years, and there is fierce competition among companies and countries to lead this industry. The emergence of iFlytek’s Spark Model is another indication that China is committed to being a global leader in AI technology.
