Meta security team: ChatGPT, AI the latest threat vector

As the newest technology that “captures people’s imagination and excitement,” generative AI has drawn the attention of “bad actors,” according to security researchers at Meta.

“Since March alone, our security analysts have found around 10 malware families posing as ChatGPT and similar tools to compromise accounts across the internet.”

Meta Security found malware families on AI app

The security team at Facebook’s parent firm Meta discovered eleven malware families in March that were impersonating ChatGPT and other artificial intelligence applications. In browser plugins, some of these malware families have been discovered.

Since March, our security experts have discovered ten or so malware families that pose as ChatGPT and other programs of a like nature in order to access accounts on the internet.

The reason these “bad actors” have shifted to AI, according to Meta, is because it’s the “latest wave” of what’s capturing “people’s imagination and excitement.” These “bad actors” include operators of malware, scammers, spammers, and others.

The study comes at a time when artificial intelligence is a hot topic, with ChatGPT garnering a lot of attention in particular.

According to the research, “for instance, threat actors have created malicious browser extensions that pose as ChatGPT tools and are sold in official web stores.”

As Meta Security mentioned, some of these “malicious extensions” contained ChatGPT-compatible processes, allowing the virus and ChatGPT to cooperate.

Meta AI is developing its own AI

The company’s security team then stated, citing the hoopla surrounding digital currency and the scams that have resulted from it, that bad people prefer to travel to where the newest fad is:

“This is not unique to the generative AI space. As an industry, we’ve seen this across other topics popular in their time, such as crypto scams fueled by the interest in digital currency.”

They added that “the generative AI space is rapidly evolving, and bad actors know it.”

Guy Rosen, Meta’s chief security officer, went a step further and stated that “ChatGPT is the new crypto” for these evil guys in a recent interview with Reuters.

But it’s crucial to remember that Meta is currently developing its own original AI.

To advance its augmented reality and virtual reality technology, Meta AI is currently developing various types of AI.

The CEO of Meta, Mark Zuckerberg, claims that despite having a sizable financial stake in the Metaverse, AI is currently the company’s major investment.
