South Korean tech giant and market leader Samsung is taking artificial intelligence and related fields by storm right now.
Samsung is the latest company to take a stance against the widespread use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, which are now disrupting a number of important global businesses.
According to an article published by Bloomberg on May 2, the company plans to prohibit employees from utilizing generative AI tools like ChatGPT. Samsung employees uploaded “sensitive code” to the site, prompting the company to implement a new policy.
Samsung has warned its employees that the proliferation of artificial intelligence poses new security risks. Concerns were voiced in the internal memo about the data sent to AI platforms and the prospect that it would be stored on external systems over which the company would have little to no say in terms of access or deletion.
“HQ is reviewing security measures to create a secure environment for safely using generative AI to enhance employees’ productivity and efficiency.” the company said.
The company is “temporarily restricting the use of generative AI” until safeguards are in place, though, as the statement continued to explain. Samsung has banned the use of any generative AI tools on any of its computers, tablets, phones, or internal networks.
Employees were also told not to use their own devices for work purposes, or they would risk “disciplinary action up to and including termination of employment.”
In April, Samsung conducted an internal research on generative AI tools, and results showed that 65% of participants were worried about the security implications of the technology.
Samsung is hardly the first major company to have doubts about futuristic innovations. Since the beginning of the year, many large corporations have banned or severely limited the use of ChatGPT. This includes JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America, Goldman Sachs, and Citigroup.
However, many of these same companies are developing their own AI tools at the present time. JPMorgan has created a ChatGPT-based algorithm that analyzes Federal Reserve statements for trading indications. In addition, Samsung is working on an AI tool that can translate and summarize documents.
