Social media App MeWe will provide Frequency Blockchain’s self-sovereign identity to its 20M users

Social Media App MeWe will give Frequency Blockchain’s 20 million users a self-governing identity.

MeWe will integrate with the Frequency blockchain network, a Polkadot parachain, according to an announcement made at Consensus 2023 on April 26. This quarter, the company will begin migrating user accounts to the new network, according to the announcement.

The blockchain company said that the integration will let MeWe users take control of their personal data and give them a way to control the data they have on social networks.

MeWe was introduced in 2012 and marketed as a “Facebook alternative” with purportedly enhanced privacy protections. In September, Axios reported that the network had more than 20 million users. In November of 2022, Polkadot introduced Frequency as a parachain.

Social networks generate the so-called social graph to depict the interaction of people, objects, and interests. This crucial information largely remains in the hands of large technology companies and is frequently used to target advertisements to particular users. Consider how Spotify allows you to see what your peers are listening to and recommends music.

The Frequency blockchain creates a “social identity” that users may utilize across Web3 applications to join the social network. This effort will permeate the web as crucial infrastructure. Frequency stated app users own their identities and privacy settings.

The “social identity” is made by the Frequency blockchain

Frequency, a Polkadot parachain, has its own rules and logic but is compatible with the main chain and other parachains. Instead of paying per block, parachains lease Polkadot, frequently with community finances. Frequency says this improves scalability and stability. For social media applications, the Frequency blockchain can manage high throughput.

MeWe users will have the option to adopt the Frequency blockchain.

The Frequency blockchain evolved from the work of the Decentralized Social Networking Protocol (DSNP), another technology that enables applications to provide Web3 functionality to users.

Project Liberty, a non-profit financed by real estate billionaire Frank McCourt to disrupt social media, supported DSNP.

McCourt Global, the investment firm of the billionaire, led a $27 million investment round in MeWe in September 2022. Amplica Labs, the primary contributor to Frequency and creator of DSNP, is a subsidiary of McCourt Global.
