Blond:ish, a DJ, producer, and advocate for eco-friendliness, recently announced a groundbreaking NFT project on April 5th that combines digital assets with physical, biodegradable vinyl records.
This project enables customers to receive physical copies of her latest album by purchasing an NFT. The vinyl records are made from naturally occurring bacteria that mimics plastic and can decompose in any environment, including the ocean. In contrast, traditional vinyl records are made from polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and produce 12 times the amount of greenhouse gas emissions.
This initiative is part of a growing trend in the NFT scene called “phygital,” where digital assets have a physical component to them. NFTs have been utilized by musicians in a variety of ways, including as a component of album releases and as a new mode for music streaming.
For instance, in August 2022, the rock band Muse released an NFT album, becoming the first new chart-eligible album format to be added in seven years.
Mainstream music artists like Snoop Dogg have also used NFTs in single releases or to promote additional content alongside their music.
The NFT scene is constantly evolving, and there is talk of a new genre of NFT-driven music emerging.
Sony Music filed a trademark application for NFT-authenticated music in September 2022, and in March 2023, Spotify tested a new Web3 wallet integration for token-enabled playlists. As such, the possibilities for NFTs in the music industry continue to expand.
