Pussy Riot Protest Art NFT Triggers Russian Criminal Charges

Russian feminist protest and performance art group Pussy Riot frontwoman Nadya Tolokonnikova is on the Russian Interior Ministry’s wanted list for a 2021 NFT piece depicting the Virgin Mary.

According to a press release made by Pussy Riot on Wednesday, the Russian government has used an NFT as evidence for criminal charges against the group for “hurting the religious emotions” of the people of Russia.

According to Pussy Riot’s translation of the criminal citation, the NFT in the most recent instance, titled “Virgin Mary, Please Become a Feminist,” portrays the Christian icon framed in what are described as “anatomical characteristics of the female external genitalia.”

The activist claims that her most recent art show, “Putin’s Ashes,” which opened at the Jeffrey Deitch gallery in Los Angeles in January and ended at the beginning of this month, is to blame for the new incident. Tolokonnikova is an experienced artist and activist who has harnessed the power of distributed systems to great effect.

To help underrepresented groups and marginalized artists, she co-founded UnicornDAO in 2022 and helped raise over $4 million. She played a critical role in the creation of UkraineDAO, which raised over $6 million by selling a non-fungible token (NFT) depicting the Ukrainian flag to fund resistance and relief operations in the country.

She also provided finances to Ukrainians on the ground, which helped save lives in the conflict’s early days. She is not frightened by her recent arrest and plans to use her talents as an artist and crypto enthusiast to continue her struggle.
