P&G and Carrefour hold consumer experiment in metaverse

Proctor & Gamble, a consumer product company, and Carrefour held an uncommon experiment in the Metaverse last week: a trial session that invited consumers to participate in a series of tasks for learning about cleaning products.

The three-day meeting was unusual compared to the efforts of many companies to use the Metaverse. Instead of putting users in a virtual world to “learn more” about the company, the P&G and Carrefour session included giving users a task, deadline, and reward.

There was also a low barrier to entry, with users only needing to make an account and choose an avatar to get started. No VR headset was required, that can cost hundreds of dollars to buy.

The P&G metaverse activation used a famous mascot: Mr. Clean. The test’s tasks were performed in Mr. Clean’s kitchen, where users spent an average of 13 minutes there. As reported by Meta News details the activation, P&G and Carrefour are emphasizing learning and customer feedback instead of framing the experiment as a sales driver.

Carrefour is familiar to the Metaverse. In 2022, the company purchased land in The Sandbox, a well-known metaverse platform. Carrefour’s Elodie Perthuisot stated at the time that the move was in line with its digital transformation strategy. The land bought in The Sandbox would be at the center of the company’s Metaverse activities.

The Metaverse has been in the news in 2022

When Mark Zuckerberg changed Facebook’s name to Meta and announced his Metaverse ambitions, interest in the virtual world increased. In 2022, months after the name change, Metaverse momentum hasn’t slowed down, with seemingly daily news about the fledgling technology. Below are 3 stories that have been covered in the Metaverse in the current year.

A few days ago, the Wharton Business School revealed that it was announcing a 6-week Metaverse education course. The training course named “Business in the Metaverse Economy” is organized together with Prysm Group, an economic consulting firm which concentrates on emerging technologies.

Besides, just a few days ago, MTV Video Music Awards reported that they are adding a “Best Metaverse Performance Category” to their awards list. The music giant decided to create the category after noticing that numerous performers were creating shows in virtual worlds such as Decentraland and The Sandbox.

Thereafter, the Shibu Inu. Last week, virtual reality company The Third Floor revealed that it was cooperating with the creators of meme coin to create a virtual world for SHIB members. Built on 100,000 pieces of land, this realm will be used to create rewards and facilitate the buy of in-game items.

P&G and Carrefour’s Metaverse trial is appealing news, if just because it shows the Metaverse tech being used in a various, lightweight fashion.
