Hyundai files new trademark for NFTs and VR

South Korean automaker Hyundai is diving deeper into NFTs. The newest evidence is the company’s latest trademark filings covering a wide range of NFTs and virtual reality possibilities. Below what we know up to now:

• Hyundai filed the newest trademark applications on July 6, 2022
• They cover NFTs and NFT-backed media, involving the issuing of NFTs.
• They also consider VR apparel, footwear, and sports equipment
• Ultimately, they open the possibility for virtual reality avatars and car photos.

Mike Kondoudis, a trademark and patent attorney well-known on Twitter, initially published the news. Hyundai seems to be gearing up for another Web 3-related move, given their previous successes in the field. But apart from the language in the trademark application, the actual specifics are unclear. Hyundai has not yet made a statement about this filing.

Hyundai is no stranger to NFTs or Web3. On May 9th and 10th, it released an NFT series named “Shooting Star” where Metakong found a star attached to the windshield wiper of a Hyundai Pony. The “Shooting Star” NFT drop used a common delayed-reveal tactic, where a placeholder photo placed over the real NFT photo until it was displayed.

The automaker has taken its initiatives in Web3 to a higher level, even among other automakers as well. It has created a community of NFT collectors and stressed its meta mobility theme, that includes values such as inclusion. Its newest trademark application is a sign which it’s not over yet, and we can await more from the South Korean giant.

Car companies are moving to Web3

Car companies, from manufacturers of performance cars to racing car leagues, have turned to Web3. Below are 3 examples of car-related NFT news which show the car industry is serious about Web3.

Initially, there is Lotus. The British sports car company announced its plans to access the NFT industry about a month ago, collaborating with Ripple, the creators of XRP. The NFT drop pays praise to the performance car’s brand and marks its launch in the space.

Second, there is British performance car manufacturer McLaren. Two months ago, it published via a press release that it planned to access the NFT space with two drops. The initial is strictly for owners of McLaren vehicles and the other “invite-only”. NFT holders would get many benefits, such as a virtual tour of McLaren’s engineering facilities.

Ultimately, there is NASCAR. The racing sports leagues have been leading the way in combining Web3 with racing in the US. At the Texas Motor Speedway, it organized several NFT drops, involving a gift NFT to IRL ticket holders for the weekend festivities.

As evidenced by the moves of Hyundai and others in the space, automakers and the auto industry look serious about NFTs and the Web3 world.
