Catalonia will create its own metaverse

Catalonia, a region in northern Spain, is building its own metaverse. Local government officials plan to build “Cataverse” on the Catalan language and culture area. Daniel Marco, Director General of Innovation of Catalonia, spoke about that issue and the pressure for “smart Catalonia” at the European Blockchain Convention (2022). Here is what we know.

• The goal is to make Catalonia a “smart country” which competes in the global economy
• Blockchain will play an important role in creating this digital economy

• Catalan institutions will take part in the Cataverse, making it a center of Catalan culture
• The goal, in both cases, is to nurture young talent while opening the door to careers

Marco described the effort to nurture young talent in the region of Catalonia. He stated that the government has already adopted policies which have created university programs to find and develop talent in extraordinary young people. The government first appointed Marco for this duty in 2014.

“We have so powerful policies to build talent from universities,” Marco said. But as the government needs so many profiles to invest, it has created other programs, such as boot camps, possibly for other age groups or backgrounds.

Catalonia is an autonomous region in Spain which lately sought its independence. It includes the four provinces of Barcelona, Girona, LIeida, and Tarragona. Barcelona is its most famous city.

Catalonia joins South Korea as the geographical elements, creating a metaverse

Catalonia building its own metaverse interesting, and it is also surly rare. So few geographic entities have decided to release their own metaverse, even after Web3 technology hype.

A few months ago, South Korea revealed it would invest 224 billion won, or $187 million, in a countrywide metaverse. The target: To back the production of NFTs and digital content, beside the growth of virtual cities, media and education.

As the officials explained, the South Korea’s metaverse would also host many promotional activities. These events contained hackathons and metaverse developer contests. The move was part of a larger push, named the “Digital New Deal,” that would encourage the growth of digital advanced technologies.

The move may have been successful in at least one way: Solana Labs has committed to investing $100M in the ecosystems, particularly for Blockchain.

As the Catalonia government has not reported any budget figures, certainly, the amount needed to build the metaverse is not small. But considering the region’s rich history and culture, it could be an interesting addition to the digital landscape.
