Catalonia’s director-general of innovation, Daniel Macro, talked with Cointelegraph’s managing editor, Alex Cohen, about some of the most important steps the government has taken to make the area a digital powerhouse. Macro said these things at the European Blockchain Convention in 2022. (EBC).
Macro says that the COVID-19 epidemic that has been going on for the last two years has made it clear that the digital economy is a part of the economy as a whole. He went on to say that Europe was a good example because it had taken steps to digitize its energy deals and a number of other deals.
As the director of the SmartCatalonia Government Strategy, Macro took over in 2014 the task of making Catalonia a “Smart Country” that is important on the international stage. Also, the minister wants to create a digital economy that is influenced by the real world. This is because blockchain technology and the metaverse are becoming more popular.
He said that the government is planning to make a Catalan metaverse called Cataverse. He made it clear:
“Cataverse will be linked to the Catalan language and the Catalan culture. That is what we want to have in this metaverse, that Catalan entities that are doing things for the culture can do that in the metaverse .”
The Catalonian minister of innovation then talked about how the government wants to make Barcelona a digital powerhouse. He said that a lot will depend on skills, and that the government has passed laws and university programs to help young people develop these skills. He told me:
“We have very strong policies to generate talent that are from university but also we are skilling programs like boot camps and other activities a lot because we need different profiles.”
He went on to say that the government is trying to combine the two goals, which are to find new talent and attract more businesses with a friendly workplace.
When asked about blockchain projects that visitors to Barcelona might be able to take part in, the minister gave the examples of a project based on individual health care and a few others based on public transportation.
