The new Snapchat My AI feature severely disturbs users

If NFTs were the big thing last year, AI is the big thing this year.

AI is currently everywhere, from terrifyingly impressive text-to-image generators to ChatGPT, and as of this week, at the very top of your Snapchat app.

Users discover that the app’s new ‘My AI’ feature is conspicuously displayed in the user interface. The utility, which is essentially a ChatGPT bot, is located at the very top of the app, and it’s safe to say that not everyone is a fan.

Write a song for your best friend who loves cheese, find the best IYKYK restaurant, or Snap it a photo of your garden to find the perfect recipe. Now free for everyone who uses Snapchat.

My AI was introduced to Snapchat Plus subscribers earlier this year, and is now available to all users. Similarly to when Instagram imposed full-screen videos on its users, there appears to be a widespread sentiment of “We didn’t ask for this” online.

One of the creepiest and most controversial things about My AI is that it seems to know where its users are, even though it says it doesn’t. Apps using location data isn’t a big deal, but it’s strange that the chat bot seems to want to make sure you know it doesn’t. In fact, Twitter is full of examples of My AI giving location-based advice even though the user has turned off location-based services and said they don’t know where they are.
