YouTube stars Rhett & Link debut Web3 Channel offers token rewards

With Mythical 24/7 on Rewarded.tv , Rhett & Link intend to attract tens of millions of YouTube viewers to Web3.

Rhett & Link is a popular comedy duo on the internet with tens of millions of fans across their YouTube channels. On Friday, the Web3 streaming video service Rewarded.tv revealed that Rhett & Link have started their own channel.

Rewarded.tv , the most popular feature of blockchain streaming platform Replay, gives users a reason to watch movies, TV shows, and live channels by using a gamified, on-chain system that tracks and rewards watchers with crypto and non-fungible tokens (NFTs). The service’s media library has both titles that have already been made and new ones.

The Rhett & Link channel on Rewarded, Mythical 24/7, will feature their most popular YouTube series, “Good Mythical Morning,” as well as their food-focused series, “Mythical Kitchen,” and podcast, “Ear Biscuits.” Previously, the channel debuted on Roku Channel in March without any promotional incentives.

Members of the rewarded community who view the channel can earn the platform’s native RPLAY token, which can be exchanged for premium content and other benefits. Theta, a layer-1 blockchain network dedicated to video streaming, powers the tokenized infrastructure of Rewarded.

Rewarded is one of an increasing number of Web3-native media products that rely on the allure of gamification and tokenized ecosystems to attract audiences.

The RPLAY token is meant to keep users hooked on Rewarded and involved in the community as a whole. Viewers can get the cryptocurrency not only by watching content on the platform, but also by competing on leaderboards, completing tasks, collecting NFT badges, and joining live watch parties.

The announcement made on Friday is part of a larger effort by Rewarded to attract large audiences to Web3 with premium content from well-known brands. Rhett & Link (a.k.a. Rhett McLaughlin and Link Neal) have amassed billions of views on their videos and podcasts, and they have a massive following across all of their channels.

For this plan to work, though, the platform and its tokenized ecosystem will have to be easy for people who don’t know much about crypto to use. This is something that many complicated, tech-heavy, Web3-native platforms that have tried to go mainstream have failed to do.

“We’re bringing in new users who aren’t necessarily familiar with crypto,” Replay CEO Krish Arvapally said. “We understand how important it is for media brands to ensure their Web3 experiences are as simple as they are fun. Luckily, the industry is quickly catching up, and once users are watching, getting into the crypto side of things only takes an email address.”

Rewarded also just released a collection of governance NFTs that allow holders to vote on what content is shown on the app, which can be used on Apple TV, Roku, Amazon Fire TV, Android TV, Samsung TV, and a web browser.
