Peggy Chung and Robert Simons of Gadget-Bot are adapting their Kaidro webcomic into a Web3 game and animated television series.
Gadget-Bot, a production company, has been working on the “Kaidro” science fiction universe for over a decade. Now, the co-founders are bringing their experience with visual storytelling from webcomics and social video into Web3 with a PC role-playing game (RPG) on Ethereum scaling network Immutable that is set to launch this year.
“Kaidro” takes place in a post-apocalyptic world where a faction of mech-wielders contends against powerful magic users. The game will combine player-versus-player, player-versus-environment, and broader questing mechanics, in which three teams of three players must accomplish various objectives on maps while fending off opposing teams.
Simons and Chung think that Web3 is the next natural step for their big group. Aside from being creative producers and visual storytellers, the two are also TikTok stars with over 1.3 million fans across three channels.
They have previously used Kickstarter to finance the development of “Kaidro,” and have raised thousands of thousands to publish a series of physical graphic novels based on the original Webtoons comics, which have received over 1.6 million views and a 9.6-star rating.
“When we were growing this fanbase, we were creating this huge world. When we saw Web3, we saw it as this way of giving ownership to that fanbase and letting them be a part of it,” Simons said. “We saw things like NFTs and things like that as a way for people to actually own a portion of the ‘Kaidro’ world and forever own it.”
The upcoming Kaidro game is set to make waves in the gaming world, with its unique approach to character ownership. Each non-fungible token (NFT) will grant players access to a playable character from a specific clan, ranging from mechs to spirit guardians and pilots.
The game will initially launch on PC, with plans to expand to mobile devices in the future. Every non-fungible token (NFT) will provide distinct storylines exclusive to the corresponding character, and gamers will have the opportunity to access character-specific items.
“We wanted to give the marketplace to the NFT holders,” Simons said. “They’re able to clone their NFTs up to a certain amount, and sell those back to players who may not necessarily be that interested right off the bat in NFTs, but they might like the skins. This allows for players to buy those skins and help rank up points for those said NFT holders.”
There will also be a free-to-play version of the game for people who want to try Kaidro out before buying an NFT. Like most PVP games, Kaidro will have “seasons” of material. This means that each year will be split into themed time periods that focus on different stories.
At the end of each season of Kaidro, one group will “win,” and that will change how the next season goes. Kaidro will also offer non-transferable, soul-bound battle passes as NFTs for players who want to get more loot and other rewards.
“We’ve rebuilt the game multiple times at this point,” Simons said. “The connections they have built with GameStop, all these different environments they’re really tapping into really feels like they’re trying to become game-centric over a lot of the other systems that we’re seeing out there,” Simons said.
