Only on the Gala Film platform will the dystopian sci-fi series RZR, which is currently in post-production, make its debut worldwide in July.
Gala Film, a division of Web3 entertainment startup Gala Games, is the producer of the sci-fi dystopian drama “RZR,” which stars Danny Trejo, Mena Suvari, and Emilio Rivera.
The three seasoned Hollywood actors are due for special guest star roles in the gritty drama series, which is set in a near-future Los Angeles where underworld crime and cutting-edge technologies—including crypto and artificial intelligence—are intricately linked. The announcement has been teased on social media this week.
Suvari gained notoriety for her nominated work in the 1999 film “American Beauty,” whilst Trejo appeared in “Spy Kids” and the obscene action series “Machete.” Rivera has been in both “Sons of Anarchy” and its sister program, “Mayans M.C.,” which he currently stars in on FX.
The remaining regular cast members are Mimi Davila (“Broken Angels”), Richard Cabral (“Mayans M.C. “), David Bianchi (“Queen of the South”), and Christopher Marquette (“Barry”). Bianchi, the series’ creator and actor, wrote “RZR” and executive produced it under his Exertion3 Films company.
Filming for “RZR” is already complete, and post-production is presently in progress. In July, the eight-part series from Web3 startup Gala Games will premiere on the Gala Film platform. The creators of the show then aim to sell it to a major streaming service.
The objectives of “RZR” are the same as those of any film or television production, despite the fact that the show’s subject matter heavily incorporates cutting-edge technologies like the blockchain and its creators previously sold NFTs to promote community and engagement, according to Bianchi.
“Even though this is a Web3-born project that is being distributed primarily via Web3 outlets, that doesn’t change the mechanics of filmmaking, and it doesn’t change the mechanics of performance,” Bianchi continued.
“RZR” viewers won’t require an NFT, in contrast to recent Web3-powered film projects, in order to access and watch it. Additionally, viewers will have the chance to buy and engage with NFTs and other Web3 elements connected to the program. Owners of NFTs have access to exclusive materials from behind-the-scenes and other benefits.
This approach is part of Bianchi’s theory on how to use Web3 to engage large audiences most effectively: start with the stick of entertainment rather than the carrot of instruction.
According to Bianchi, the development of a connection to a truly amazing show will aid in the onboarding of Web2 minds—of normies—into Web3.
“That has to come first. And then let them hear through the grapevine that there are digital collectibles,” he continued. “As opposed to spoon-feeding people NFTs.”
Episodes of “RZR,” which is produced by Noelle Hubbell (“Don’t Worry Darling,” “NBC’s “Superstore”), were directed by Yuri Alves (“Grind”), Christopher Folkens (“Catalyst”), and Daniel J. Pico (“Marfa Girl”), who also co-wrote the series with Bianchi.
