IBM has collaborated with The Masters to incorporate a contemporary element into the historic golf tournament.
During the tournament, the company will use generative AI technology to add automated audio commentary to more than 20,000 video clips of golf shots. The spoken AI commentary can be accessed through the official Masters app or website.
IBM trained the AI to process golf language, avoiding redundant play-by-play iterations to make the clips informative and engaging. The Watson Text to Speech API chatbot service was used to build the new audio commentary feature.
IBM’s AI models will analyze six years of historical Masters performances, totaling over 120,000 golf shots, to generate hole-by-hole participant predictions for the duration of the tournament. The predictions can help fantasy golfers make judgments for their teams. Since 1996, IBM has been an official partner of The Masters.
The rise of AI chatbots and generative AI has been making headlines recently, with industries experimenting with the fast-evolving technology. However, some have expressed concerns over the broader societal impact of AI.
Elon Musk, Steve Wozniak, and Andrew Yang were among the over 1,100 prominent technologists and researchers who signed an online petition last week that called on OpenAI to pause development of its ChatGPT-4 generative AI system due to concerns about the impact that advanced artificial intelligence can have on humanity without safeguards and regulations.
IBM is one of the most recent technology giants to adopt generative AI. However, it has adopted a different approach to an additional controversial AI-powered technology.
IBM CEO Arvind Krishna stated that artificial intelligence is a powerful tool that can help law enforcement keep citizens safe but vendors and users of AI systems have a shared responsibility to ensure that AI is tested for bias, particularly when used in law enforcement, and that such bias testing is audited and reported.
The Masters is a fitting platform for IBM’s AI innovations, as it combines modern technology with a classic event.
Fans can enjoy enhanced experiences through AI-generated commentary and predictions while watching one of golf’s most prestigious tournaments.
