A feature that Ticketmaster made that lets artists give NFT owners special access to events has made it possible for the technology behind digital collectibles to be used in another way.
Ticketmaster said in a statement on Monday that these “token-gated ticket sales” work with Ethereum tokens kept in digital wallets like MetaMask or Coinbase.
The heavy metal band Avenged Sevenfold (A7X) asked for the tool at first as a way to reward owners of its Deathbats Club NFT collection, which came out in late 2021. Depending on the artist, rewards may also include specific seats or unique travel plans in addition to early access to sales.
In a tweet sent earlier this month, M. Shadows, who is the lead singer of A7x, talked about how the band works with Ticketmaster.
David Marcus, the executive vice president of global music at Ticketmaster, said in a statement that “This new capability allows artists to get special access and rewards to specific fans they want to super serve. Artists like Avenged Sevenfold are using Web3 and NFTs to build deeper relationships with their fans, and we’re proud to help foster that connection through live events.”
In another tweet last week, M. Shadows said that getting tickets with Deathbats NFTs was the easiest thing he had ever seen.
He wrote in a tweet, “Let’s hope more bands follow.”
Ticketmaster released a service in August with the goal of letting dealers on its platform give out NFTs before, during, or after events. This is the first time that service is being used.
At the time, Dapper Labs said Ticketmaster had already made more than 5 million NFTs on the Flow blockchain. The same company that made CryptoKitties and NBA Top Shot also made the Flow (FLOW) blockchain in 2019.
Ticketmaster also used Flow to send out more than 70,000 commemorative NFT tickets for Super Bowl LVI in 2022.
