The enormous MapleStory franchise will enter Web3 with its own dedicated Supernet on the Ethereum scaling network Polygon.
Nexon, one of the leading game publishers in the Asia region, has unveiled plans for a new Web3 title based on their iconic 2D role-playing franchise, MapleStory Universe. At the Game Developers Conference earlier this week, the company also unveiled their intention to launch a private Supernet on Polygon for the game.
Nexon’s MapleStory, first released in 2003, has enjoyed an enduring level of success over the years. The company revealed earlier this year that the game has earned over $4 billion in revenue and has acquired more than 180 million registered users. According to the game’s Steam page, the total number of players has exceeded 260 million.
“We are looking forward to expanding the NFT ecosystem envisioned by MapleStory Universe by building on Polygon,” MapleStory Universe Group Leader Hwang Sun-young said in a statement. “We will work closely with the team at Polygon Labs to develop and market the game.”
Similar to Avalanche’s Subnets, Polygon’s Supernets offer a dedicated sub-network for use by individual initiatives. They offer creators some customization options while shielding decentralized applications (dapps) and games from potential performance issues on the larger public network.
MapleStory Universe was announced last year, but we still don’t know when it will come out. But Goel said that there won’t be any pre-orders for NFTs and that players will be able to get things as NFTs just by playing the game.
MapleStory Universe is an NFT-focused game, so tokenized assets can be sold or transferred in the game’s marketplace. MapleStory Universe will have its own crypto token.
“We plan on issuing our unique coin, and specific details about this will be revealed later with our tokenomics,” the game studio said.
Nexon is a South Korean and Japanese company, but the preponderance of its revenue is generated in South Korea. According to Goel of Polygon Labs, this is not the only South Korean studio embracing Web3.
President of Polygon Labs Ryan Wyatt stated in a statement that South Korea is “a crucial market” for Web3 gaming.
