Even though no one was there in person, Ryan and Candice Hurley repeated their vows in front of thousands of people in the metaverse. William Pits, a reporter for 12 News, an NBC station in Phoenix, watched the wedding on his laptop while sitting on his couch.
This wedding is different from the rest. He says that most of the two thousand people who attended this tiny wedding in the sky or the metaverse didn’t even know the bride and groom were there.
The couple reaffirmed their vows in both the real world and the metaverse. Their dog was there, and six other people were there as well. The groom said in a speech at a law office where the real-life vows were renewed, “What better way to extend our love to the metaverse beyond the spheres of the regular universe?”
They have been married for fourteen years. But it wasn’t all smooth sailing, because the couple wasn’t used to walking down the aisle in the metaverse, there were some tech problems.
They turned their prenuptial agreement into a non-financial transfer (NFT) and moved into virtual reality with a tool called Decentraland (Non-Fungible Token). In the metaverse, there was a QR code that people could use to give cryptocurrency as wedding gifts.
There was also a place where guests could pick up their party favor, a digital trading card of the couple’s dog called an NFT. The groom also said that some people might find it strange, but that people will get used to it eventually, just like they did with the internet. “I think people thought the same thing when the telegraph or internet first came out. It was a fun and unique way to fall in love all over again.
