According to the source, the change will happen when Meta separates Facebook accounts from the main experience of its Quest VR headsets and replaces them with Meta accounts that need a name and “date of birth so we can verify your age.”
With its old rules, Facebook made people use the name “they were known by in real life.” This is no longer the case with Meta accounts.
There are still limits, of course. Let’s take them apart.
If you label your word “adult,” you can include “sexually suggestive” information like “near nudity, portrayals of people in suggested or suggestive poses, or a setting centered on overly suggestive activities.” But “nudity, depictions of people in explicit poses, or material or worlds that suggest or suggest sexuality” are still not allowed.
The same is true for violence and controlled drugs. “The marketing of marijuana, alcohol, tobacco, or age-restricted activities (like gambling),” but not “illegal drugs or prescription drug addiction,” can be the focus or main point of “mature worlds.” And while “intense or overly violent fictional material” with blood and gore that “could shock or disgust consumers” is allowed, real-life violence is not.
You might notice that some of the lines aren’t as clear as others. How suggestive is too suggestive when it comes to sex? In some parts of the United States, it is also against the law to smoke weed. For a company that thinks moderation in the metaverse is important to its success, Meta is clearly giving authors who want to test the limits a chance to cause trouble.
Meta has worked hard to make Horizon a “safe and welcoming place for everyone,” as its policy page says. Concerns that people were acting out sexual harassment while the game was being tested led to the addition of a feature that stops other players from putting their avatars too close to yours. It also has a feature that makes people’s voices hard to hear if you aren’t friends with them. This could help stop harassment in virtual public spaces.
