Lady Gaga has joined Web3, but she won’t be doing any singing. Instead, she gets people’s attention in Robert Wilson’s NFT video portrait GAGA/MORAT, which was first shown at the Louvre in Paris, among other places.
The GAGA/MORAT was based on the painting of Marat by Jacques-Louis David from 1793. During the French Revolution, Marat died in a bathtub as he was getting ready to write a letter. In the GAGA/MORAT video clip, Lady Gaga is shown as Morat. She is sitting in a bathtub with a letter and a feather pen. As the video plays over and over, Gaga says the mysterious lines again and again.
After showing at the Louvre, GAGA/MORAT went to Art Basel in Miami before going to the Phillips Museum in Washington, D.C. The last auction for the NFT, which started at $100 and ended at $15,120, is now over. Even though the winner can pay the remaining balance in either USD or Ether, this art house auction of NFTs was only done in USD.
According to the fine print on the NFT page on the museum website, only Coinbase Custody Trust, Coinbase, Fidelity Digital Assets Services, Gemini Trust Company, or the Paxos Trust Company were allowed to accept payments in Ether. Other rules for the person paying with Ether were that they could only use one wallet and that they couldn’t accept partial payments.
This is Lady Gaga’s first time entering the NFT market, which is popular with artists and singers. As of right now, the Foo Fighters, Madonna, Eminem, Travis Barker, and the Foo Fighters have all established themselves in this environment that mixes technology and culture. It is Robert Wilson’s first business, and it fulfills his wish to turn the video clips, of which there are more, into digital assets.
In Droves, musicians go into Web3
Lady Gaga is the first artist to join the Web3 realm, but since at least 2021, many more musicians, singers, and even record companies have done so. Here are three examples of people, music companies, and a very popular NFT collection that have all started using Web3 in the music business.
Snoop Dogg is the first. The California rapper has done business in a way that shows he is interested in Web3. He had plans to turn Death Row into an NFT record company. He owned a Bored Ape Yacht Club, CryptoPunk NFTs, and his own “Doggies” NFT collection.
The second-best collection is the Bored Ape Yacht Club NFT collection. A lot of musicians and singers are interested in these pictures of bored apes. Hip-hop artists like Eminem, Lil Durk, and Lil Baby all have Bored Apes on their albums. Madonna and Travis Barker are also BAYC owners.
Third and last are the music labels. Universal Music Group has been very busy with its partnership with LimeWire, an NFT marketplace that just opened its queue. UMG artists can make money on Web3 in a number of ways.
So Lady Gaga joins a wide range of artists and singers on Web3. If history is any guide, she won’t be the last well-known musician to join the cause.
