The Metaverse, a shared virtual space which people can enter through avatars, has countless uses. Virtual real estate markets, shopping, and working are all important components of these domains. But maybe no use case is more powerful than the simplest one, getting together with your friends or colleagues.

This situation occurred precisely in December 2021, when a class meeting of the Harvard Advanced Management Program appeared to be coming to an end. The reasons are known: a worldwide graduate base, people with full-time jobs, and a travel situation fraught with COVID. Thus, the event organizer turned to a simple solution: Mesmerise, a metaverse created with virtual reality.

Sean West, an alumnus who directs Mesmerise’s Board, put together the event. The company sent Meta Quest 2 VR headsets to 90 graduates in 28 countries before they all gathered in a shared virtual space to interact. The metaverse functioned as a place, enabling people to interact in groups and one-on-one.

The alumni can go back in time, talk about their school periods, and also do some networking. Moreover, there were some limitations. The organizer kept the reunion to 90 minutes to avoid fatigue. At the end of the event, the organizers told the attendants to stay in touch the unfashionable way or via the Metaverse.

Though the metaverse may never completely replace face-to-face meetings, West thinks that using the technology for such cases is certain. And as the technology has a ways to go, headsets can be heavy, and in specific situations, the movement can feel awkward, researchers are quickly improving it. Shortly, this metaverse use case may become its most noticeable.

The growth of the use of virtual reality technology in 2022

Virtual reality, the technology fueling the metaverse, has seen a rise in 2022, and the companies using it have been surprising. Below are two examples of VR uses in the current year.

Lately, Fender and BMW revealed that they collaborated with Meta to generate VR experiences. These experiences include the use of sound and movement to create interaction, and both are quite innovative.

The second case comes from the world of luxury jets. Here, Airbus decided to use virtual reality to encourage people to design the interiors of their virtual jets. People can make great window seats, add an entire bathroom, and also change the material of the seats.

Virtual reality headsets are getting more popular, with 14 million units expected to be sold in 2022, a 36% increase from 2021. And while the Meta Quest 2 headset remains the leader, there are more options on the market.

As the technology beginning to attract the hype, it may shortly see more adoption of VR and the metaverse, much to the confusion of some critics.
