Duolingo, the well-known language-learning application and American education technology business, is stepping into the metaverse largely with the launch of the first-of-its-kind activation in Roblox which empowers developers and reminds users to do their homework.
The move means that Duolingo and its iconic Duo Owl logo will now be present in Decentraland and Roblox, both of which are so popular decentralized metaverse.
The project began after the company noticed that users in Roblox, a user-generated gaming metaverse, were creating unofficial Duolingo apps. To reward these super fans, Duolingo released a game jam, which enabled developers to submit their games to be featured in Duolingo’s virtual space. The Duolingo team then reviewed the submissions and released more than twenty games that are currently available on the Duolingo Game Hub metaverse in Roblox.
The Play games allow users to earn coins in Duo UGC, Duolingo’s native digital currency. These coins can be used to purchase Duolingo branded goods.
In another nod to fans, users earn twice as much as community-developed games. The idea is to encourage users to try out other user-generated content, blending the spirit of decentralization.
James Kuczynski, Duolingo’s Creative Officer of brand and marketing, stated that the company aimed to create an experience in Roblox which would “empower” their fans to create.
Decentraland and Roblox are top metaverses.
As the race moves into the metaverse and the competition stiffens, Decentraland and Roblox are keeping up well. Though Duolingo seems to be the initial language app to enter these metaverses, it is the only company to create experiences and expand its brand in these famous digital spaces.
Various investments were covered from big companies and brands in both metaverses in last months. Some titles related to Roblox are:
• Gucci opens a Metaverse experience on Roblox
• Gap cooperates with Roblox for Metaverse Experience
• Charli XCX and Samsung perform metaverse concert in Roblox
• Spotify opens an island in the Roblox Metaverse
While companies such as Meta work to evolve their vision of the metaverse as well, it will be exciting to see the battle between decentralized and centralized metaverses, and how many metaverses can finally exist.
The Duolingo project indicates that, at least for now, the company is betting on decentralized metaverses and a community-oriented approach. It is certain that the metaverse should allow Duolingo to improve its teaching and language learning programs by making them more inclusive, creative, and engaging.
