Noah Davis, who is the director of computerized transactions at Christie’s and helped bring NFT to the art market with a bang, is going to work on CryptoPunks, which is a very popular NFT collection.
With the sale of Beeple’s digital work Everydays: The First 5000 Days in March of last year, Davis helped bring non-fungible tokens out of the metaverse and onto the auction house floor (2021). It was the first time an auction house sold a single NFT and the first time Christie’s accepted cryptocurrencies to pay for an artwork. Everydays was sold for a mind-boggling $60.25m ($69.3m with fees) after 33 bidders made 353 offers, some of which raised the price by $10m.
It’s no secret that BAYC was heavily influenced by Matt and John’s project. Punks as fine art, an experiment in generative art that was written on the blockchain, was accepted by a diverse group of people who stayed in 2018 when so many others left.
The creators of BAYC, GordonGoner and Garga.eth, knew only two things when they bought Punks from Larva Labs. The first was to give commercial rights to NFT holders, just like they did with BAYC. The new rules will be put into place in a few weeks.
This is why it’s taking so long:
Sincerity-wise, these things were too important to rush and too important for the NFT community as a whole to risk changing in isolation.
The second thing Yuga Labs had to do was just sit and listen for a while. This is what they have always done. In general, they think that the Punks community thinks of Punks the same way that Gordon Goner and Garga do, which is as great art. So, what should be done with the project?
They got in touch with Noah Davis (on Twitter as @nonfungiblenoah), who was in charge of Beeple’s The First 5,000 Days auction at Christie’s and the NO TIME LIKE THE PRESENT sale that put Punks and Apes side by side in Hong Kong.
Co-foynders found out from talking to Noah that his plans for Punks and Web3 as a whole are similar to their own. Yuga Labs has said that Noah will join the Yuga team in July as the leader of CryptoPunks.
Noah was a passionate partner and senior member of Christie’s 20th and 21st Century Art specialist division. According to a statement from Christie’s, he played a big part in establishing our authority in the fields of NFT and digital art. They are excited to work together with Noah in his new job.
They are committed to a slow, careful approach to Punks that takes the support and participation of the community into account. The team said, “We are proud to be in charge of this historic IP, and we have the most faith in Noah and the Punk community.”
