As part of this year’s new “connect-to-consumer” efforts, Shopify will let merchants offer special products for tokenholders. This will help them connect with fans and increase sales. The project is called “tokengate,” and early adopters can try it out in beta form.
To get started, vendors can either set up a tokengate shop through the Shopify app or add the functionality in-store. People who want to buy gated items or get into special events would have to link their crypto wallets and prove they own the nonfungible tokens that go with them (NFTs). With this function, NFT communities on the platform can connect with consumer brands.
Also, merchants can work with other brands for upcoming NFT drops and with Shopify’s merchandising partners to make premium items. Also, merchants can create special NFTs on popular blockchains like Ethereum (ETH), Polygon (MATIC), Solana (SOL), and Flow (FLOW) (FLOW). Then, they can put them on a list and sell them from their shop.
Merchants who have been invited and have an NFT collection are the only ones who can take part in the beta. To buy NFTs, neither the seller nor the buyer has to use cryptocurrency. Payment gateways include Shopify Payments, Shop Pay, and other ways to pay with cryptocurrency, as well as credit and debit cards. The buyer can get their NFTs by email and add them right away to their wallets.
Evan Keast, who helped start the website Doodles and whose NFT project is now part of the effort, said “As an ambitious community-driven project, we’ve placed a strong emphasis on setting the standard for unique NFT collector experiences. By partnering with Shopify on tokengated merch, we surprised our holders and gave the ownership of a Doodle a whole new meaning.”
