Manny Pacquiao, one of the best boxers of all time and senator in the Philippines, is releasing a series of NFT series to honor his late Jack Russell Terrier.
The canine themed creative NFT series will include 9999 NFTs which pay tribute to Pacquiao’s pet Pacman, who was killed by a car in 2020.
The Pacman NFTs, which all illustrate cartoonish dogs in combat situations, have skill-based and visual characteristics like endurance and strength, and are divided into three levels based on skill level and rarity. Holders can compete in the blockchain-based Pacman Boxing League game to earn prizes.
The NFTs with come in-real-life (IRL) utilities as well: Holders can redeem them for signed goods, live event tickets, or the opportunity to meet the 12-time world boxing champion. Although the blockchain which will host the NFT series has not yet been released, the project is expected to release on July 15, 2022.
Boxers’s investment in NFTs and Web3
Manny Pacquiao’s exploration of NFTs should come as no surprise. Anyway, this is a man who released a bid to become the president of the Philippines the previous year. Although he failed, he is not worried to take risks.
But Pacquiao is not the only athlete to invest in NFT tech. He is not even the only boxer. World heavyweight champion Tyson Fury lunched a 1: 1 memorial NFT before announcing the final fight of his career against Dillian Whyte. The NFT came with different URL utilities, consisting of two ringside tickets to the Whyte match and an opportunity to spend one day training with Fury himself.
Arguably the best pound-for-pound boxer ever, Floyd Mayweather held his initial NFT boxing match on May 14 in Dubai, allowing NFT holders around the world access to exclusive live broadcast of the match and various other IRL utilities. And YouTube star who has become a boxer, Logan Paul is deeply involved in the NFT game, and has lately filing trademarks which indicate he intends to open his own NFT marketplace.
As NFT tech enables digital assets to be traded and stored safely on blockchains, they change the way athletes can interact with their fans. And entrepreneurial-minted boxers are paying attention.
Time will show whether the Pacman NFT drop will be successful, but it definitely makes good sense: The great boxer wants his beloved Jack Russel immortalized on the blockchain. For NFT lovers, boxing fans, and dog lovers, this kind of intention may be something to leave behind.
