Some Coinbase employees want three senior managers at the bitcoin exchange fired, according to a now-deleted petition on Mirror.xyz. On Twitter, Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong, who was not listed among the three, described the conduct as “really dumb on multiple levels.”
The resignations of Coinbase Chief Operating Officer Emilie Choi, Chief Product Officer Surojit Chatterjee, and Chief People Officer LJ Brock were asked in the petition. A copy of the petition may be seen on the Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine.
According to the petition, “We the employees at Coinbase believe that the executive team has recently been making decisions that are not in the best interests of the Company, its employees, and its shareholders.”
Coinbase’s “failed” NFT platform, “toxic” staff assessment system, and pushy and “unsustainable” recruitment techniques, according to petitioners.
Armstrong told dissatisfied employees to “quit and find a company to work at that you believe in,” in a Twitter thread.
He said, “Our culture is to praise in public, and criticize in private,”
The split happens shortly after the exchange said it will halt recruiting and revoke a number of accepted employment offers, a problem that is also addressed in the petition. According to Brock’s blog post earlier this month, Coinbase has chosen to take additional “stringent procedures” to freeze its personnel growth in order to navigate unpredictable waters.
Many customers are also angry with Coinbase after realizing that in the event of bankruptcy, the exchange has the right to seize client cash.
“There is probably lots we can be doing better, but if you’re at a place where you want to leak stuff externally, then it’s time for you to go,” the exchange warned in its most recent financial report.
According to Armstrong, employees who sign the petition will be fired since it harms “fellow co-workers, along with shareholders and customers.”
“Obviously, there’s a lot we could do better,” he said, “but if you’re at the point where you want to leak info outside, it’s time to go.”
