NFT artist Pink Cat, known as Saba Moeel as well, was not invited to Toronto Comic Arts Festival after many scandals over her art and online behavior. TCAF explained why they first invited Pink Cat and why they are withdrawing their invitation.
Why did TCAF unwelcome NFT artist Pink Cat?
The TCAF is one of the most superior events celebrating only comics. Nevertheless, TCAF was criticized after introducing Pink Cat as one of the festival’s featured guests.
Initially, Pink Cat is an NFT artist, and it is unusual for a comic festival to feature an artist whose main focus is NFTs. The situation rapidly increased when social media users saw her online history. They found that she has traced some artworks previously.
Plus her controversial art, there are tweets that insult artists in the community, use Black culture for profit, and make transphobic things.
Pink Cat’s comment after she was unwelcomed
Polygon contacted Moeel about this, and she answered with the below message:
“Yes, these guys invited me to disinvite me. They paid for the hotel, the flight, and so on. I did not even know who they were. So strange. It’s not my world. I am a real life artist I do not care about organizations or trade shows, I have my special following it’s not a party following the mainstream. The Los Angeles Times named me the Gen Z Garfield, we’re not in one league.
TCAF’s explanation about the issue
On Tuesday, the TCAF host and organizers issued a statement addressing the concerns of those who called out Moeel to the event.
As reported by TCAF, they firstly posted an invitation to Moeel according to their daily digital comic work on Instagram. Moreover, they confess that at the time of the invitation, they were not aware of Moeel’s online behavior, tracking charges, and plagiarism.
“We apologize for scheduling and promoting this artist. It was a mistake. As a promise to our community, we will use this as a moment of learning as we move forward as an organization, and will re-examine the controls and balances we presently use to process our scheduling decisions”, the report said.
