Non-fungible tokens (NFTs) are becoming three-dimensional, and Sony aspires to lead the trend.
The new 3D NFTs were designed to be used with Sony’s Spatial Reality Display, a display unit with a high-speed vision sensor that follows users’ eye movements to create 3Ds based on eye positions, according to a press release shared with Cryptonews.com by South Korea’s blockchain network operator Theta Labs (THETA). In this device, goggles or other eye-related accessories are not used.
The product will be ready in late 2020 for around $5,000.
According to Theta, the parties would provide a “pilot project” in which NFTs “representing any in-world digital item, avatar, or collectible may be seen and displayed in glasses-free 3D mixed reality form.”
The approach would give the metaverse “a new level of reality and a palpable presence,” according to the South Korean company.
The project will feature ten copies of a token named “The Tiki Guy” that is “Theta-powered.” The Sony tie-in comes in the form of ten tokens that may be redeemed for a Sony Spatial Reality Display by owners with a USștiigștiingștiinștiiștii.
Tiki masks, which originated in ancient Polynesian and Hawaiian cultures and were hand-carved wooden decorative masks representing deities and thought to ward off evil spirits, are a nod to the NFT’s design.
According to Theta, Sony’s Spatial Reality Display will provide NFTs a “whoa, baby” feeling and “display NFTs and virtual experiences in an entirely new way.”
According to Theta, the mask-themed NFTs will “demonstrate the next-generation capabilities of Sony’s Spatial Reality Display” and will enable “collectors” to study their “digital metaverse assets” without the need for any 3D accessories.
Users without access to 3D display devices will be able to purchase 2D versions for viewing on standard displays, according to the company.
According to Theta, non-fungible tokens “representing any in-world digital item, avatar, or collectible” will be “visualized and shown in glasses-free 3D mixed reality form,” so “bringing a new reality and physical presence to the metaverse.”
Sony was quoted as claiming that the NFT program was “merely the most recent effort” to highlight the company’s “rapid adoption of metaverse-friendly technology.”
Sony’s music and entertainment departments have already experimented with NFTs, including a “Baby Shark” token issue with the video’s South Korean creator Pinkfong and “Spider-Man”-themed NFTs. Last month, both Sony and its rival Universal announced that they had worked with Snowcrash, an NFT trading platform managed by renowned musician Bob Dylan.
In February of this year, Theta collaborated with Samsung’s smartphone division to launch a series of NFT digital collectibles to celebrate the launching of two new Samsung smart devices, the Galaxy S22 and the Tab S8. Customers who pre-booked and pre-ordered devices in South Korea got commemorative NFTs.
