Upon rediscovery, a lost painting of Egon Schiele is going for auction as NFT with LaCollection.
The Leopold Museum in Austria has rediscovered the original work of Egon Schiele, that was missing for over 90 years. In addition, the museum aims to put it in an NFT sale based on works of the Viennese artist.
“Leopold Czihaczek at the Piano” is an abstract painting picturing the artist’s uncle and legal guardian. Actually, Schiele painted it soon before his 17th birthday and recorded it in his 1972 catalogue raisonné .
The long-lost painting was found in a private Viennese series whose owner sought advice to restore it. “This is an exciting discovery,” said the museum director, Hans Peter Whiplinger.
The painting will be exhibited in the museum as a part of a five-year loan. Besides, from May 16 to 26, it will join a fundraising NFT sale via LaCollection.
At the same time, 24 NFTs will be offered in various price levels.
• 3 “ultra- rare” works with two copies each beginning at 100,000 euros.
• 10 paintings with ten copies each – beginning from 15,000 euros.
• 11 paintings, each with a hundred copies – beginning at 499 euros.
For example, among the “ultra- rare” works is the painting of Schiele’s lover, “Portrait of Wally Neuzil”. Once again, the Nazis stole it in 1938 from Austrian Jewish art dealer Lea Bondi Jarai.
In addition, proceeds from the NFT sale will be used to renovate the painting and expand the museum’s series. The museum keeps one copy each as well.
